"Monitoring the Future" Research
Monitoring the Future is the name of the Nation's largest survey regarding the drug abuse of young people. After marijuana, prescription drugs are the most frequent type of drug abused among children. The information from this survey provides this information. It also tells the nation that seventy percent of those who abused prescription drugs received the drugs from a family member or friend, which probably means that the drugs were not properly disposed of or were not kept in a safe place. Only a mere five percent of the prescription drug abusers got the medicine online or from an actual drug dealer.
The nation is facing this problem together, so we need to stand together to prevent it. The United States' military faces the problem of prescription drug abuse as well. "In our military, illicit drug use increased from 5% to 12% among active duty service members from 2005 to 2008, primarily due to non-medical use of prescription drugs" (WhiteHouse.gov). |
